February is the month of love, which means it’s the perfect time to grab a date and cuddle up for a movie or TV show based on your favorite book. And no, we’re not just getting romance adaptations in February. So whether your “date” is a romantic one, a cat, or just a really comfy blankie, let’s ride out these cold months with book-to-screen adaptations in a wide variety of genres. Here are seven new adaptations coming to theaters and TVs near you this month.
Apple Cider Vinegar (Netflix, February 6)This upcoming Netflix series is inspired by the book The Woman Who Fooled the World by Beau Donelly and Nick Toscano. It follows the story of scammer Belle Gibson, who falsely claimed to be managing her cancer completely through diet and natural medicine. Belle will be played by Kaitlyn Dever in the limited series. Alycia Debnam-Carey plays Milla Blake, Belle’s best friend. The series is created by Samantha Strauss (Nine Perfect Strangers) and directed by Jeffrey Walker. |
The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep (Netflix, February 11)This is the second anime feature film in The Witcher universe, based on the novels by Andrzej Sapkowski. It’s a follow-up to 2021’s The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf and based on the short story “A Little Sacrifice” from Sapkowski’s Sword of Destiny. Doug Cockle, who voices Geralt of Rivia in the video game series, reprises his role in this new movie. Joey Batey and Anya Chalotra are also reprising their roles from the live-action series. Christina Wren also stars. The film is directed by Kang Hei Chul with a screenplay by Mike Ostrowski and Rae Benjamin. |
Captain America: Brave New World (Theatrical Release, February 14)Valentine’s Day is bringing us some really strong options for film adaptations in theaters. Option #1: the latest Captain America film with our new Captain America, Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie). Sam Wilson first appeared as Falcon in Captain America #117 in 1969 and became the first Black superhero in mainstream comic books. The film is directed by Julius Onah and also stars Danny Ramirez, Shira Haas, Carl Lumbly, Xosha Roquemore, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, Giancarlo Esposito, Tim Blake Nelson, and Harrison Ford. |
Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy (Theatrical Release, February 14)Option #2 for Valentine’s Day: the return of Bridget Jones. Renée Zellweger and Hugh Grant return for this fourth film in the series, based on the novels by Helen Fielding. This movie is directed by Michael Morris from a screenplay by Helen Fielding, Dan Mazer and Abi Morgan. The film will be released theatrically and also available to stream on Peacock. |
Limonov: The Ballad (Theatrical Release, February 19)This film is based on the 2011 biographical novel Limonov by French writer and journalist Emmanuel Carrère. It follows the life of Russian writer and politician Eduard Limonov, as played by Ben Whishaw. While it premiered at the 77th Cannes Film Festival in May 2024, Limonov: the Ballad is finally hitting theaters across the globe this month. The movie is directed by Kirill Serebrennikov from a screenplay by Ben Hopkins, Paweł Pawlikowski, and Kirill Serebrennikov. |
Reacher (Prime Video, February 20)Jack Reacher fans rejoice! The series is returning to Prime Video for a third season later this month. This season is based on the seventh book in the series, Persuader, by Lee Child. Alan Ritchson returns as Jack Reacher. Joining him this season are Anthony Michael Hall, Brian Tee, Sonya Cassidy, Johnny Berchtold, and Olivier Richters. The first three episodes will be released on February 20, with new episodes following every week. |
The Monkey (Theatrical Release, February 25)Osgood Perkins (Longlegs) returning to horror with his new film The Monkey, an adaptation of the Stephen King short story of the same name from the collection Skeleton Crew. Theo James stars as twin brothers Hal and Bill. Also starring are Tatiana Maslany, Elijah Wood, Colin O’Brien, Rohan Campbell, Christian Convery, and Sarah Levy. Hollywood is going to keep being Hollywood, friends. These adaptations are so exciting, but once again, we’re looking at movies that are adapted from books by primarily white authors. Keep reading widely and supporting authors of color, and hopefully we’ll see adaptations from more diverse voices in upcoming months.
