On January 19, when TikTok disappeared in America for almost a whole day, it was a nightmare. For me, it meant that I lost one whole day of learning the latest TikTok dance. Others lost their livelihood.
Whether TikTok remains or if it is eventually taken away forever, social media as a whole is here to stay. That means we have to confront both the wonderful things and the horrifying things about living in a social media-obsessed society. It should come as little surprise that leaves plenty of fodder for a chilling read. Here are three novels coming out in 2025 featuring social media and social media influencers that offer just that.
Julie Chan is Dead by Liann Zhang (Atria Books, April 29)As a grocery store clerk, Julie Chan feels like her life is going nowhere. Meanwhile, her identical twin sister Chloe seems to have everything. Chloe VanHuusen is a social media influencer who lives a glamorous and seemingly perfect life. Then Chloe dies, and Julie sees an opportunity to take over her sister’s life. At first, a life full of designer clothes and millions of followers feels incredible. But the deeper Julie gets into Chloe’s world, the more she realizes not everything is what it seems. |
Feeders by Matt Serafini (Gallery Books, May 20)All Kylie Bennington wants is to become a successful social media influencer. Then she discovers a strange app called MonoLife with very strict rules: you must interact with other users at least twice daily, and you can’t talk about the app with anyone outside of the app. Refusing to adhere to the rules could mean losing everything. As Kylie dives deeper into the dark and twisted world of this app, she will have to decide just how far she’s willing to go for her chance at fame and followers. |
Vampires at Sea by Lindsay Merbaum (Creature Publishing, October 7)This horror-comedy novella explores the horrors of getting too close to a social media influencer. Rebekah and Hugh are two emotional vampires from San Francisco who are looking for a relaxing vacation. Together, they head off on a queer Black Sea Cruise, where Hugh becomes completely enthralled by a nonbinary social media influencer named Heaven. Meanwhile, Rebekah’s whole world and sense of reality starts crumbling. |
Social media, with all of its joys and terrors, are here to stay. Might as well lean in and enjoy a good read about it. Happy reading and happy nightmares, horror fans!
