We exist in an era when writers aren’t restricting themselves to a single genre. Lucky us! You can find works that merge all kinds of genres: there are horrormances, weird westerns, and cozy anything (because these days, cozy comes in pretty much all genres). It makes for lively reading, that’s for sure!
Personally, I’m a big fan of genre mash-ups. I’ve gotta be honest, I’ve always loved a goofy fantasy. Books like The Princess Bride captivated me as a young reader, hitting that comedic sweet spot while also delivering on solid world-building and great characters. And then last year I read Hannah Nicole Maehrer’s Assistant to the Villain and it sparked a renewed love affair with humorous fantasy reads. Not only that, but it also added a delightful element to my existing affection for funny fantasy with its slow-burn romance plotline.
These days, romantasies are one of my current faves. While I gravitate toward horror during the autumn, the combination of romance and fantasy makes for some happy escapism that’s perfect for the late winter and early spring. Love is in the air and all that.
Even better during the cold winter months and uncertain times we’re living through are what I think of as fun romantasies—you know, the ones that’ll have you laughing (or, at the very least, smiling) as you navigate magical worlds alongside burgeoning love stories. The ones you can’t put down because their worlds are such a joy to enter into. The ones you read that make you marvel at the way the author’s mind must work to create such a story.
The books on this list aren’t all funny, but they’re all fun. Some are cozy, some are steamy, and every single one of them is a downright good read. Perhaps the best thing about these books is their ingenuity. After all, each genre has its own distinct conventions and tropes. How do you meld a second-chance romance with a fantasy quest narrative? Or how about merging Korean folklore with a detective novel? These authors have come up with amazing combinations that I, for one, would never have dreamed of.
So whether you’re in the mood for a comedic tale or a swashbuckling adventure, these romantasies offer you windows into an impressive array of worlds. Whatever you’re in the mood for, there’s something for everyone on this list.
Fun Romantasy Books to Fall in Love With
![]() Apprentice to the Villain by Hannah Nicole MaehrerGiven the impact the first book in this series has had on my reading, I have to start with Apprentice to the Villain. It’s the second book in the series that began with Assistant to the Villain, and it totally defies the so-called “second book syndrome.” The first book introduced us to Evie, a down-on-her-luck woman living in a fairy-tale world who ends up taking a job as The Villain’s personal assistant. While she whips his office into shape, her understanding of good and evil in their realm begins to shift. Without giving too much away, this second book sees the pair’s relationship continue to deepen alongside increasingly treacherous political circumstances. As the friends (who totally want to be more than friends—no spoilers there, because that tension is thick) navigate unfolding perils together, Maehrer’s storyworld gets deliciously complex. Bonus: The third book in the series, Accomplice to the Villain, is due out this summer, and I’m looking forward to rereading the entire series in anticipation! |

This Will Be Fun by E.B. AsherThis novel was an unusual read and, as the title makes clear, a fun one at that. Co-authored by three writers, the storyworld is a really interesting blend of elements from pseudo-medieval fantasy and modern-day technology. The three main characters haven’t been close for a decade, since they saved the realm and lost the fourth member of their ranks. But the queen’s getting married and they can’t refuse her invitation, so it’s time for them to face their demons. Along the way, old romances rekindle, and past traumas surface. Oh, and they’re gonna have to get it together so they can save the realm again because, for better or worse, nothing ever stays in the past. |
![]() Confounding Oaths by Alexis HallBook two in the Mortal Follies series, this queer romantasy is a bit light on the romance, but solid on the fantasy. It’s not a sequel, but continues in the same storyworld as the first book. This time, we follow John Caesar as he attempts to save his marriage-seeking sister from a cruel curse. As he travels with the rather alluring Captain Orestes James, his own romance heats up despite the troubling circumstances. The narrator is an entirely different character whose strong perspective on the story adds an extra element. While it’s a little odd to call this a romantasy given that it’s set in a world a lot like our own (during the early 1800s), it ticks all the boxes and will keep you laughing your way through the magically-infused historical landscape. |
![]() Five Broken Blades by Mai CorlandThe world Mai Corland creates here is not one I’d want to live in—it includes rampant sexism, misogyny, and violence—but somehow this series manages to balance a fairly serious atmosphere with a fun and extremely readable storyline. The narration alternates between six different characters, and it doesn’t take long for things to heat up with this crew of liars and miscreants. The mission is murder—assassination, if you want to get technical about it—and with all the deception and tangled romantic threads, you’ll be turning the pages as fast as you can. The second book in the series continues in the same vein, albeit with the romances taking a little bit of a backseat to the action, and you’ll be happy to know the third book is slated for release this summer. |
![]() Nine Tailed by Jayci LeeJayci Lee is one of my favorite romance writers, and this foray into a world of Korean folklore plus romance didn’t disappoint. Sunny is no ordinary human; in fact, she’s a fox spirit who’s trying really hard to keep a lid on her powers because of past events. But the past never stays in the past, so when an old friend turned private investigator, Ethan, shows up asking for her help, it’s obvious that everything’s about to change. Sunny’s attraction to Ethan is instantaneous and intense, and it causes some trouble for them as the danger level increases. As the pair journey across realms, it becomes increasingly clear that there’s no turning back. The second book in the series is due out this August! |
![]() Can’t Spell Treason Without Tea by Rebecca ThorneWhat fantasy-loving bibliophile could possibly turn down a sapphic cozy fantasy romance starring two battle-weary women who just want to open a bookshop? Not me, that’s for sure. The series follows Reyna and Kianthe through a series of dangers ranging from kidnapping to weddings—and everything in between. While the couple’s experiences across the books push the boundaries of what might be considered “cozy”—so fair warning if you’re wanting super low-stakes—their misadventures are entertaining, and it’s fun to watch their relationship evolve across the books. While this is only the first book in the four-part Tomes & Tea series, the final two books are both due out within the next six months. |
Bonus Sci-Fi Romance for Romantasy Fans
![]() I Got Abducted by Aliens and Now I’m Trapped in a Rom-Com by Kimberly LemmingFrom the author who brought us the hilarious Mead Mishaps romantasy series comes a comedic sci-fi adventure that’s bound to have you laughing all the way across the universe. PhD candidate Dory is just trying to study meerkats when everything goes wrong. A lion almost kills her, but she’s saved by aliens who take her and said lion (Toto) to a different planet. Cue the pink dinosaurs, two hot aliens (yup: interplanetary love triangle), and a quest to find some answers about what exactly is going on. It’s a wild ride, as you can tell from the title alone, and I loved every page of it. Oh, and did I mention that Kimberly Lemming manages to work some super steamy scenes into this one? You’ve gotta check it out for yourself. |
